When the handsome insurance broker Bob Williams is elected to the Illinois state legislature as a Democrat from the Chicago suburbs, he finds an entirely new world full of flawed characters clashing over ideas, policies and money. Meanwhile, his wife, Cindy, descends into madness and is committed to a mental institution. Losing the companionship of his wife, Bob is drawn into a love affair with Cynthia Rodriguez, a beautiful legislator who does not believe at least outwardly in the world of marriage and children.

After a half hour of punishing herself, her despair reached new heights. Cynthia was shuddering with the memory of that horrid man touching her when she suddenly had the urge to kill herself and end all the pain. With determination on her face, Cynthia rose from her bed and walked toward her balcony. She opened the sliding door and stood on the small balcony looking over the railing. The breeze felt very cold on her nearly naked body. The bushes and leafless trees looked small from her tenth floor window. Cynthia smelled the wet ground which would soon take her in its embrace. She began to swing her leg over the balcony. She yelled out to no one in particular.
I am a terrible woman who would destroy everyone I love and everything I believe in. I dont deserve to live. What good is fame when I dont have my Bob, Roberta and Robert Jr.? Life is worthless without them.
Both humorous and tragic, The Legislative Dance provides a fictional inside look at the elected officials foibles and all charged with the task of deciding some of lifes most important issues.

Malcolm Chester earned a bachelors degree in political science from Brown, a masters degree in child studies from Tufts, and a Juris Doctorate law degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology Kent, Chicago. He worked as a public affairs vice president for Pepsi and currently consults while practicing law. Chester lives in Des Plaines, a Chicago suburb, with his wife, Georgia.
